Roald Dahl's own favourite illustrator,Blake illustrated several other books of the author's work, during the author's lifetime, and these illustrations bring considerable enchantment to this story.
The Reverend Robert Lee,Vicar of Nibbleswicke and a charming and God-fearing man, caused utter confusion and often genuine consternation among his devout parishioners.
Robert Lee had suffered from severe dyslexia as a boy and had successfully overcome his problems with the help of the Dyslexia Institute.Later in life, soon after arriving at Nibbleswicke,he suddenly developed a particular and unusual sort of dyslexia.Occasionally, and without his knowledge, the words he used turned themselves around and came out of his mouth backwards and quite the wrong way round. For example, trap became part and his own name became Eel.The outrage and embarrassment which resulted was considerable.A really superb copy in superb condition.
Roald Dahl describes the awkwardness of the Vicar's situation on many occasions and explains the simple cure found in walking constantly backwards.
Quentin Blake, born 1932,Sidcup,Kent.Son of a civil servant.Educated at Chiselhurst,Sidcup Grammar School and Cambridge University.Attended life classes at Chelsea College of Art.Tutor in illustration at the Royal College of Art (1965- 78) and Head of the Illustration Dept since 1978.He works in pen and ink and watercolour in a popular and unmistakable style, capturing essential character and movement with wit and gaiety in a few rapid strokes. He has illustrated many editions of the BBC Jackanory television programme. He was chosen as the first Children's Laureate in 1999.
